“If Grenache were a person, it would be a pretty girl’s very–nice-but-plain best friend.” This provocative quote is an accurate illustration of the traditional perception of Grenache. Some other widely-held beliefs are that finding a varietal wine produced with Grenache in the States of any quality is impossible and that it’s only a blending varietal. All erroneous! Grenache is undergoing a remarkable makeover these days and may just be the next big trend in the wine world. How could a varietal transform so suddenly from relative obscurity as “the plain girl next door” to a prom queen finalist so quickly? We’ve swirled the glass, now let’s dive in and do some tasting!
USA - Monterey, California
2006 Hammond Vineyards
Very dense aromas of plum, graphite, blackberry, white pepper and lighter floral hints. Very full bodied on the palate with well balanced acid and big ripe tannins. Sweet blackberry and vanilla with long lingering roasted cocoa beans in the finish.
France - Gigondas, Rhône Valley
Saint Cosme "Little James' Basket Press" Vin de Table
Black raspberries and cherries interwoven with pepper, spice, and earth. Deep, fruity, round, and pure, it is an attractive red to drink over the next year or so.
Spain - Cariñena, Aragón
2010 Valcántara - Old Vine
Black cherry, cracked pepper and a slight wave of perfume make the nose attractive, while the palate is bright and a touch sharp with red-fruit flavors. Cherry, red plum and gentle spice notes work the finish.
