Soil

Another key element in defining a particular AVA region is soil composition. There are three main classifications of soil: loam, clay, and sand, each with its own distinct qualities. Having a working understanding of a vineyard’s soil gives the grower the knowledge needed to customize viticultural practices, to “micromanage” the vines annual cycles for maximum flavor expression in the eventual grapes.
